What is new for the 2027 season
- 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC threshold: $2,000. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the reporting threshold rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made in 2026, and will be adjusted for inflation from 2027. Vendor lists built on the old $600 rule will over-report.
- 1099-K: back to $20,000 and 200 transactions. Payment platforms report only above both limits, so fewer clients will receive one, but income is still taxable without a form.
How firms spread the load
| When | Work to get ahead of |
|---|---|
| November to December | Bookkeeping catch-up for business clients, W-9 collection, engagement letters and Section 7216 consents for any offshore work |
| January | 1099 vendor listings against the $2,000 threshold, payroll year-end, organizers out |
| February to mid-March | Partnership and S-corporation returns and K-1s |
| Mid-March to April | Individual and C-corporation returns; extensions for anything incomplete |
| May to October | Extended returns, amended returns, planning |
Firms that use an offshore team usually hand over the data-entry-heavy work (bookkeeping clean-up, 1099 listings, trial balance to return, first drafts) and keep review and signature in-house. See outsourced accounting and tax prep for CPA firms and the 7216 and PTIN checklist.
